The computing power required for AI will increase by more than a million times over the next five years.

According to a new study, "the computing power required for AI is doubling every 100 days and is projected to increase by more than a million times over the next five years."

Abstract

Computing is a crucial driving force in human civilization's progress. In recent years, we have seen the emergence of intelligent computing, a new computing paradigm that is reshaping traditional computing and promoting the digital revolution in the era of big data, artificial intelligence, and the internet of things through the development of new computing theories, architectures, methods, systems, and applications. Intelligent computing has dramatically expanded the scope of computing, moving it away from traditional data-driven computing and toward increasingly diversified computing paradigms such as perceptual intelligence, cognitive intelligence, autonomous intelligence, and human-computer fusion intelligence.

For a long time, intelligence and computing followed separate evolutionary and development pathways, but they have grown increasingly interwoven in recent years: intelligent computing is not just intelligence oriented, but also intelligence driven. This kind of cross-pollination has resulted in the creation and rapid advancement of intelligent computing. Intelligent computing is still in its infancy, and many advancements in intelligent computing theories, methods, and applications are expected in the near future. We give the first complete assessment of the literature on intelligent computing, encompassing its theoretical foundations, the technological merger of intelligence and computing, significant applications, problems, and future directions. We feel that this study is extremely timely and will provide academic and industrial researchers and practitioners with a comprehensive reference as well as significant insights into intelligent computing.
